Estimating the global conservation status of more than 15,000 Amazonian tree species

چکیده
Estimates of extinction risk for Amazonian plant and animal species are rare and not often incorporated into land-use policy and conservation planning. We overlay spatial distribution models with historical and projected deforestation to show that at least 36% and up to 57% of all Amazonian tree species are likely to qualify as globally threatened under International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List criteria. If confirmed, these results would increase the number of threatened plant species on Earth by 22%. We show that the trends observed in Amazonia apply to trees throughout the tropics, and we predict that most of the world's >40,000 tropical tree species now qualify as globally threatened. A gap analysis suggests that existing Amazonian protected areas and indigenous territories will protect viable populations of most threatened species if these areas suffer no further degradation, highlighting the key roles that protected areas, indigenous peoples, and improved governance can play in preventing large-scale extinctions in the tropics in this century.

Commentary: Estimating the global conservation status of more than 15,000 Amazonian tree species
Citation: Feeley KJ (2016) Commentary: Estimating the global conservation status of more than 15,000 Amazonian tree species. Amazonian forests provide ecosystem services that are critical at the planetary scale. Unfortunately, human land use threatens to drive many rainforest species to extinction. In a recent study, ter Steege et al. (2015) provide valuable insight into the threats that curren...
متن کاملInvestigating the Effect of Topographic factors on the distribution of oriental beech in Hyrcanian forest, Iran
Studying the present and future distribution status of important forest species is a prerequisite for the need of conservation programs in order to play their undeniable role in tackling global climate change, land use change and air pollution. The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) in forests of northern Iran under the influence ...
متن کاملEffects of the surrounding matrix on tree recruitment in Amazonian forest fragments.
Little is known about how the surrounding modified matrix affects tree recruitment in fragmented forests. We contrasted effects of two different matrix types, Vismia- and Cecropia-dominated regrowth, on recruitment of pioneer tree species in forest fragments in central Amazonia. Our analyses were based on 22, 1-ha plots in seven experimental forest fragments ranging in size from 1 to 100 ha. By...

متن کاملEstimating Height and Diameter Growth of Some Street Trees in Urban Green Spaces
Estimating urban trees growth, especially tree height is very important in urban landscape management. The aim of the study was to predict of tree height base on tree diameter. To achieve this goal, 921 trees from five species were measured in five areas of Mashhad city in 2014. The evaluated trees were ash tree (Fraxinus species), plane tree (Platanus hybrida), white mulberry (Morus alba), ail...
